Delaying entry to P1 or starting school early

Children in Scotland usually start school between the ages of 4 years 6 months and 5 years 6 months old. All children who are 4 years old at the start of the school year can defer and start primary one the following year. Find out more at http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/deferredentry

If your child is not of school age, a request for early admission to primary school can be made. Find out more at http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/earlyadmission

If you want your child to go to a school run by the City of Edinburgh Council, you need to register using their online registration form. Registration opens in November for children starting P1 the following year. Visit http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/p1registration to complete the form. You are required to select your preferred catchment school – your non-denominational catchment school, your Roman Catholic catchment school, or the Gaelic primary school, Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce. If you also want to apply for a school in different catchment area, you can make a placing request when you register. See Section 4 for more information about placing requests.

Most families do not need to upload any evidence when you register. However, you need to provide evidence in these cases:

  • if your child is not attending a local authority or partner provider nursery, you
must upload your child’s birth certificate.
  • if you are not liable for Council Tax, you must provide two forms of proof of
your address (e.g., tenancy agreement; benefits award letter; utility bill).
  • if your child is baptised in the Roman Catholic faith, you must upload proof of this (i.e., certificate of baptism).

It is important that you register your child for school, even if you do not want your child to attend the catchment school, or if you plan to defer for a year.

Apply for an in-year place or changing schools

Please contact us to check if places are available if you are considering moving house. Where possible, schools reserve places for children moving into the catchment area. However,  there is no guarantee of a place. You may also request a place if our school is outside your catchment area. This will only be granted if there is a place available. Before you apply, download the year group checker to find out which year group you should apply for. Download the year group checker (PDF, 100KB)
